Sunset : Whitney Houston

I mimicked your every turn, note, breath, pause, in hopes of mastering your songs even remotely close to your mastery.  Through you I became a better singer. I dreamt of becoming a singer, having your poise and grace, and your intense control and fluidity.  I dreamt that I would meet you and be able to share with you how much I enjoyed your music and how much your voice impacted my determination to sing with strength and emotion, sounding as effortless and as angelic.

Life takes us to unexpected places, sometimes dark and treacherous, and although I can't imagine the breadth of difficulty you faced, I always hoped with hands clenched tightly that you would find your peace with us on earth, find your way to sing again, even if not perfect, but find the beauty in sharing your gift.  You leave us a tremendous gift that can be shared forever, and countless performers were born from your presence and music.  That I do not consider a waste of life.  You lived a full life in a short span, and all I can hope for is that you somehow know how much you were cherished, and hope you are resting in loving peace.

Now, to play what became one of my favorite songs of yours, which came later in your career, an album I wholeheartedly admired and felt had more of your own soul within it.  I cherish these lyrics and how you sang them everyday, as I will cherish all of your contributions to this lifetime.

OCCUPIED

To be seen by many one must get on a really big stage.

I agree that Wall St. is the best stage for such a display of severe discontent; rapidly growing wealth disparity, vast tidal waves of unemployment and foreclosures, the ever increasing profits of large corporations and banks in times of turmoil, various Government officials' constant blame game and media antics leading to Government inaction, leading back to the scene of major crimes committed against the lower and middle class, Wall St.

Watch (at times) live independent coverage here:

Music is Alive and Well

Anthony Keidis says, in essence, if you aren't hearing good music, you are just not looking hard enough, and I completely agree. Go look.

Gota De Luz Giveaway Winner

A big thanks to fellow Etsy-er Linda Pruitt for entering the contest and sharing with us about her recommended charitable organization, Portland Strides. She wins a Gota De Luz bracelet, and proceeds from the sales of the Gota De Luz bracelet during the entire month of May will help raise funds to donate to her walk this year, a walk sponsored by The American Cancer Society to raise awareness of and to help fight breast cancer.

We also send a warm hug to Linda, a cancer survivor herself. To help sponsor Linda's walk, please check out her Portland Strides profile and help become a drop of light in someone's life.

And be sure to check out Linda's Etsy Shop!

Love Thy Neighbor...

I always hear some sort of complaint about Valentine's day, "I show my love everyday, I don't need a holiday for it", "its a scam" or just a simple "I hate Valentine's Day". Since this holiday will not be disappearing from our calendars anytime soon, we have an opportunity to make this greeting card holiday into something much more meaningful. Forget the chocolates and flowers, greeting cards and balloons, show your capacity for love to the world around you...

3-2-1 Jello, Oh How I Miss Thee

I figured that someone would have found or figured out the recipe to one of my favorite childhood desserts. Although I wish I could find a picture of this Jello product, the idea is simple. This version of Jello would set into three layers, the first two being a mousse consistency, and the last being the jello layer. Apparently this recipe works with any packet of jello, but will I be victorious and be able to replicate the magic of 3-2-1 Jello?

From Boston-Baden.com
"After adding the boiling water, the mixture was blended for 30 seconds, then blended at high speed for 1 minute, then add a cup of ice water and blend on high for 1 more minute. You fill each glass HALF FULL, then refill the glasses completely in the same order. It 'automatically' separates into 3 layers upon chilling. Basically they call this gelatin with 2 toppings (on the box). Molding this product is NOT recommended."

Let's see if this works! Their Sherbert 1-2-3 recipe also looks fantastic.

Pixies @ Hammerstein Ballroom 11/25

Fantastic show at one of my favorite venues. Waiting for those pre-sale tix were completely worth it. As they did all week long, they began with Doolittle b-sides, but I think this encore was the best (see setlist here). Seeing the kids amp'ed and ready for show # 2 starting at 1am made me feel extremely old, well, that and I had to wake up at 5am to watch a 20lb. turkey battle a slightly confused 40 year old Caloric oven.

They ended the first show with VAMOS

Camaraderie = #27

...Can't buy or sell it. Its the magical essence of a successful team, whether on the field, in an office, or at home. Sure I haven't agreed with certain decisions made by the team or organization, but it sure was a fun year for watching Yankee baseball, and I will always enjoy watching the Yankees play when they play with this kind of charisma and camaraderie. Congratulations to the NY Yankees for #27. Its nice to see all of the smiles in my hometown (Boogie Down Bronx forevah!) and on the faces of Yankee fans all around the world. I LOVE BASEBALL!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Is Almost Over But...

Many of us unemployed folk do not have access, do not qualify for or can afford health insurance. This does not mean that we cannot be screened and tested for life threatening diseases. In many states, residents have access to programs and organizations hosting free screenings for a myriad of diseases, especially cancer. I came across a few websites, not only listing information free screening services for Breast Cancer, but also includes information on events raising money to continue such services.

National Breast Cancer Foundation

Healthy NY Cancer Services Program for NY State
Cancer Vixen Fund
Avon's Breast Health Resource Guide

Etsy Spanglish Team members are curating Pink themed treasuries throughout the month of October, here are a few currently running (treasuries are only active 2-3 days at a time) A few of the items included in these treasuries are donating profits to cancer organizations and research.
