I mimicked your every turn, note, breath, pause, in hopes of mastering your songs even remotely close to your mastery. Through you I became a better singer. I dreamt of becoming a singer, having your poise and grace, and your intense control and fluidity. I dreamt that I would meet you and be able to share with you how much I enjoyed your music and how much your voice impacted my determination to sing with strength and emotion, sounding as effortless and as angelic.

Life takes us to unexpected places, sometimes dark and treacherous, and although I can't imagine the breadth of difficulty you faced, I always hoped with hands clenched tightly that you would find your peace with us on earth, find your way to sing again, even if not perfect, but find the beauty in sharing your gift. You leave us a tremendous gift that can be shared forever, and countless performers were born from your presence and music. That I do not consider a waste of life. You lived a full life in a short span, and all I can hope for is that you somehow know how much you were cherished, and hope you are resting in loving peace.

Although today is the exception, spring feels like it is making an early arrival, and nothing transitions winter into spring better than Pimm's.

This delicious mixer was found at a local Bed Bath and Beyond. This is amazing stuff...add to soda, drink straight, its delicious.

For this drink, pour in shaker with ice, just to get it nice and ice cold, strain into a martini glass and voila!

Wrestling always brings warm memories of my great grandmother's excitement while watching the Big Boss Man, Macho Man Randy Savage, and of course Hulk Hogan. This of course came hand in hand with her cute 5 feet tall, 80 years old, only-verbalized-in-spanish contempt for Rick Flair, The Undertaker, Ravishing Rick Rude. This was a woman who spoke no english, but loved, absolutely loved wrestling. I love that my father took his grandmother-in-law to a movie theather to watch the first WrestleMania.

With the passing of Randy Savage, all I can think of is the excitement and entertainment we experienced watching the World Wrestling Federation, and all of its bright stars back in the 80's and 90's. A big thank you to him and countless others for the crazy wear and tear they put themselves through while making a cute little old Puerto Rican lady fall in love with smack talk and "violence" on TV.

A Celebrated Voice : Teena Marie

While reflecting recently on cherished friendships present and past, I realized and enjoy the memory's ability to recall bits of details that, maybe at the moment, did not cause impact or difference, but become more vibrant as time adds more color, more detail.

Teena Marie's voice resonated with many, but I loved to hear the hint of emulation in Keisha's voice. Long ago I was lucky to see an ad in Backstage magazine looking for a young Latina R&B singer to audition for an all Latina R&B group back in 1998. After auditioning I met Keisha, the core of the group and the voice that carried each song.

I remember one of the first artists to ever arise in conversation with Keisha was with regards to our favorite singers, her's being Teena Marie. People make that claim everyday, who their favorites are, but over the years I loved to see how true this was for Keish.

Keisha carried her admiration in the voice she projected during every song she sang. Our voice is ultimately born of our genes, but I can hear the fingerprint left behind from influence. Keisha's admiration made me discover more music by Teena, and I loved every minute. Teena's power and emotion left its own small fingerprint on my voice and love of music. Keisha displayed her admiration for singing and for Teena by singing her favorite song "Out on A Limb" at the Apollo Theater in Harlem for Amateur night, to the cheering and applause of a notoriously unapologetic harsh crowd.

We all wish to seek learning, hearing, seeing new things from those we admire. We never know how long we have to keep learning, keep hearing, seeing. When the time comes and those we admire leave us, all we have left is what they left in our hearts and minds. Although sad to know Teena Marie has left us, I am grateful for her voice and grateful to watch and hear a piece of her exist on in those she has touched.

Upon cracking open the cap of this spicy bottle of wine, a burst of Austrian air seems to fill me! I haven't felt this excited about a simple bottle of wine in a very long time. Amazingly priced, (usually $13.99) and almost perfectly tailored to my palate, this slightly briny, spicy, yet fruity wine by Weingut Hofer is pretty well received for its unique lightness in body with contrasting boldness in flavor.

Not the typical bottle, 750ml, beer style cap, it retains its tangy spiciness for days, and tastes best when slightly below room temperature (an accidental yet delicious discovery)

Zweigelt as defined in wikipedia is "a red wine grape variety developed in 1922, at the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria, by Fritz Zweigelt. It was a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. It is now the most widely-grown red grape variety in Austria, as well as having some presence in Canada's vineyards."

My Aromatherapy 101

For as long as I can remember, the quickest recall of lost and forgotten memories is quickly channeled through my sense of smell. I noticed over the years I have grown immensely fond of certain types of smell, immediately noticing improvements in mood, extra pep in my day or just instant chill-out.

Some of my favorite recollections through smell are commonly from childhood. This sweetly toxic smell always reappears walking on piers and boardwalks, sometimes the subway and certain brands of crayon. It recalls fond and unusually early memories of Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Traces of wood and salt mixing with the sand create this unique scent. My family frequented Seaside for group trips in a hotel across the street from Seaside Height's original log flume, where I ran with my father and sister to jump on as many times as possible, even though I hated rides with steep inclines. The little house where we awaited our little log had quirky mechanisms and is where I mostly remember finding this scent. I love to revisit Seaside, where the token slot machines still exist, beginning my little fixation at the ripe old age of 5 with gambling. Somehow the skyride or the "ski" lift still exists, which takes you from beginning to end of the boardwalk. Although the original flume is gone, traces still exist, as does this intoxicating, yet strange-that-I-enjoy-it scent.

I hold coconut as a truly favorite scent. Recalling the various dishes my greatgrandmother made in the house always called for hours of shredding the nut. Despite the child labor, the various treats still exite me. Not to mention, Coco Lopez brought a similar excitement at Christmas time... Coquito!! It is also my favorite smell when sunbathing, as all of my beach gear ends up covered in Hawaiian Tropic, (which has slightly changed their scent, I have noticed) which always reminds me of my favorite car, the car seats constantly soaked with the combination scent of the oil and my favorite parfum, Blue by Ralph Lauren. Coconut blends so well with everything!

As for my latest fixation, thanks to Anthropologie, is the candle scent I found almost exactly matches the ethereal scent floating through the Palazzo/Venetian hotels in Vegas. I have yet to find another scent that is so mind altering and peace nurturing. Titled 'Desert Dunes' by Illume, the unique scent releases sensuous hints of jasmin, lavender, cocoa butter, with maybe even a tiny hint of musk oil. A flick of a bic away from absolute relaxation in a tin.

3-2-1 Jello, Oh How I Miss Thee

I figured that someone would have found or figured out the recipe to one of my favorite childhood desserts. Although I wish I could find a picture of this Jello product, the idea is simple. This version of Jello would set into three layers, the first two being a mousse consistency, and the last being the jello layer. Apparently this recipe works with any packet of jello, but will I be victorious and be able to replicate the magic of 3-2-1 Jello?

"After adding the boiling water, the mixture was blended for 30 seconds, then blended at high speed for 1 minute, then add a cup of ice water and blend on high for 1 more minute. You fill each glass HALF FULL, then refill the glasses completely in the same order. It 'automatically' separates into 3 layers upon chilling. Basically they call this gelatin with 2 toppings (on the box). Molding this product is NOT recommended."

Virtual Parranda

The easiest way to explain the Puerto Rican tradition of a parranda de aguinaldos involves a parade of local neighbors, family and friends singing traditional and folk christmas songs while playing instruments and traveling house to house serenading for food and beverages, spreading celebration and good cheer. This originally began as a religious celebration of the coming birth of Christ beginning with masses held before Christmas day.

In remembering such a wonderful tradition, and my family's wonderful neighbors (Hola Gonzalez family!) in Co-Op city who kept this tradition alive, please enjoy this medley of songs traditionally sung during this parade. Fantastic show at one of my favorite venues. Waiting for those pre-sale tix were completely worth it. As they did all week long, they began with Doolittle b-sides, but I think this encore was the best (see setlist here). Seeing the kids amp'ed and ready for show # 2 starting at 1am made me feel extremely old, well, that and I had to wake up at 5am to watch a 20lb. turkey battle a slightly confused 40 year old Caloric oven.

...Can't buy or sell it. Its the magical essence of a successful team, whether on the field, in an office, or at home. Sure I haven't agreed with certain decisions made by the team or organization, but it sure was a fun year for watching Yankee baseball, and I will always enjoy watching the Yankees play when they play with this kind of charisma and camaraderie. Congratulations to the NY Yankees for #27. Its nice to see all of the smiles in my hometown (Boogie Down Bronx forevah!) and on the faces of Yankee fans all around the world. I LOVE BASEBALL!

I once wrote that Roy DeCarava was an artist with a timeless vision for beauty and a wonderful teacher with a sensibility for teaching artistic freedom. Today he left us, yet he leaves us with many lessons and memories to treasure. I am forever changed by his beauty and remain astounded by paths and circumstances that lead me to experience his grace and love for life.

I thank him for many things, but tonight I will specify one. I find myself on an eternal quest to discover music, and Roy used to play Sarah Vaughn, Coltrane, and other legends of jazz in the classroom when I studied photography with him at Hunter College . He gave me a list he prepared for his students who show interest in the music he played, a list of his personal favorite jazz albums to enjoy, almost like an introductory course in Jazz, Jazz 101. From that list I discovered a song, which I can easily say, is and will remain my favorite song of all time. There are over 50 recorded versions of this song titled For All We Know, written in 1934 by J. Fred Coots and Sam M. Lewis, but no one invokes the deep emotion of these lyrics like Aretha Franklin,

and tonight I dedicate this song to Roy.

We all knew him as Soupy Sales, and I knew him through my father's stories of watching the Soupy Sales Show as a kid. I still laugh thinking of my father's imitations of Fang. Then one day I heard Soupy Sales impression of Fang in person.

I worked for Sam Goody on 60th and 3rd ave. in New York City for almost three years, starting in 1998. During that time a gaggle of celebrities shopped our store. I didn't recognize Soupy Sales on the day he first entered the store, one of my managers made a case that it was him and we asked. A sweet and gentle being, he responded, and I called my father excited. "You would never guess who was in the store today... no... guess!.... (impression of Fang)...YEAH! REALLY!"

He returned a few times to the store, I imagined it was part of his morning/afternoon stroll around the neighborhood. I had my cellphone ready to call my father waiting for him to return again, after I purchased Soupy Sales biography as a Christmas gift for him that year. Sure enough he did, and yes, he mumbled like Fang for my father by phone. He was delightful company and I hope he enjoyed visiting and speaking with us as well. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as he has left us all with wonderful memories.

Many of us unemployed folk do not have access, do not qualify for or can afford health insurance. This does not mean that we cannot be screened and tested for life threatening diseases. In many states, residents have access to programs and organizations hosting free screenings for a myriad of diseases, especially cancer. I came across a few websites, not only listing information free screening services for Breast Cancer, but also includes information on events raising money to continue such services.

Procession of the Ghouls 2009

Every year, St. John the Divine hosts a unique Halloween experience in the Procession of the Ghouls. Beginning with a scary silent film with music provided by organ, the experience of watching silent films in a large cathedral easily provides for an extra chill down your spine, but I must say the spectacle following the film, an awe inspiring yet frightening procession of monsters and creatures, is an absolute must see. An event that brings more fear to adults than children, it is the perfect way to start off Halloween festivities for the weekend. Excitingly enough the Grand Organ is back in working condition and will be used during this year's screening of the original Nosferatu. This year the event falls on Devil's Night, October 30th, with two showings at 7pm and 10pm. If tickets aren't already sold out, they will. I have mine for the 7pm show, and can't wait to party afterwards.

I was recently asked to contribute to Etsy Spanglish Team member BululuStudio's Blog so I decided to write about 5 ways to Shop Eco-Friendly on Etsy... I came up with five ways easily from my past experiences working and shopping with eco-conscious companies. With that said I am aware I left out a few key elements and I wanted to bring the discussion to an Etsy forum.

Do you have items that are contributing towards a healthier environment? Know of ways that shoppers and sellers can become more conscious of how their purchases/sales affect or help the environment? Etsy shoppers, do you have recommendations for what you want to see more of from sellers?

I love the full bodied, tangy oaky taste of Chianti. With a distinct raspberry tartness, and a little lighter than average, I am loving my recent purchase of Castello D'Albola Chianti Classico (2005). I am enjoying it so much I made an Etsy treasury about wine. Snuck it in there! HA!

As I was typing the beginning of this blog I searched google hoping to find an image of the wine label, and awesomely enough, I came across an interesting online wine store Wine Library, whom have this wine available for purchase ($10.99!), and provide a passage about the estate; “Nestled in the Tuscan hills, the Castello d’Albola is an architectural tribute to the 15th century. The estate was long the domaine of famous and noble families whose influence during the Renaissance remains legendary. The estate, its vineyards and the surrounding hills are located in the heart of the Chianti region. This Chianti Classico consists of Sangiovese (95%) varietal base blended with a balance of Canaiolo (5%) grapes. Agate, Lovely Agate

I love the gemstone Agate because of the multiple variations and patterns found. Here is a treasury featuring a collection of Agate pieces, including my Tiny Buoy Necklace.

"Agate (pronounced /ˈæɡət/) is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (silica), chiefly chalcedony, characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of color. Although agates may be found in various kinds of rock, they are classically associated with volcanic rocks but can be common in certain metamorphic rocks.^[1]

Colorful agates and other chalcedonies were obtained over 3,000 years ago from the Achates River, now called Dirillo, in Sicily.^[2]

Sagittarian Packing/Unpacking

I've moved quite a bit over the last ten years, so why packing and unpacking is still a mystery to me is because I was born under the sign of Sagittarius. I am convinced that all Sagittarius are born with at least a mild case of ADD, as we are painted as impatient, fanatical, argumentative and hotheaded, indulgent, uncommitted, fears any responsibility that curtails freedom and fails to plan adequately.

So this time I tried a bit harder to beat out my severe ADD, and I think that packing was easy this time. Of course I took a lot of breaks in between and had to concentrate my mind on one room at a time (at one point i fell asleep on the floor with my head on my puppy Piruli's bed) however, now I am faced with a greater challenge. I am alone, in a big house, with each room filled with items waiting to be released from their cardboard prisons. I tried the same approach; pick a room, stay there, Alaina, stay.... stay, DON'T SIT DOWN! Wait! you were almost done with the kitchen! aaand now shes in the bedroom. Ugh.... Now there are many half unpacked boxes.

Today, with two more boxes to go, I might just finish the kitchen! Even without running to the car to escape the mountains of cardboard for an hour, hiding in Barnes & Noble! Although I like frequent change of scenery, I do wish I had more patience and time management skills to tackle this in a faster rate, because one half of me is impatient and wants it done, and the other half shuts down when overwhelmed. This is not good behavior for a nomad as myself (family tradition! lol). I think I'm just going to sit down for a while at the computer...

Just cause...

I have to bring this out again about every three years or so, its a song I never get tired of. Makes me want to dance to everything and anything, a good warm-up song.

I loved dancing this for my Abuelita, and my mom, who speaks no Portuguese, somehow taught me the lyrics to this song, which are impossible to forget. I really should learn the language... after I learn Japanese. I wonder who remembers this being played at the dude ranch during the Saint Mary Star of the Sea 8th grade trip??
